    Month before the beginning of the Czech presidency the official Internet portal http://www.eu2009.cz/ has been launched by Cabinet Office. Web still works in content and functionally limited version. It offers basic information about the presidency in Czech, English and French, and the possibility of early registration for the event for journalists.
    "From January 1 2009 Web site offers the latest news from the professional and political negotiations which will lead Czech Republic, as well as sections focusing on the history and present EU and the Czech Republic," said chief editor Presidency portal Veronika Cvejnová.
    The contents of each section was created in cooperation with leading Czech experts from various backgrounds. Photos will be part of the portal designed specifically for the portal, audio and screencast.
    The portal will be updated daily until the end of the 30th June 2009. Completely online but it will at least until the end of 2011.

Eurocentres - information points to which citizens can call with questions about the EU

The individual Eurocentres provide information on the EU for the general public and professional, offering a large range of information materials and a host of other ancillary services for those interested in a deeper knowledge of the European Union and aspects of Czech membership of the EU. Presidency of the Council - January, 1st - June, 30rd 2009

In the first half of 2009 the Czech Republic will preside over the Council of the European Union as the second ranking member countries that joined the EU on 1 May 2004. The Presidency is a challenge for the Czech Republic extraordinary scope and significance and how to assume this task, will affect its image for a long time after the end of the Czech Republic in the Council.

In co-operation ministries and the Office of the Government of the Czech Permanent Representation to the European Union launched the preparation of the priorities of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union .

The main motto of Czech EU presidency in the Council is a "Europe without barriers".

Following the main motto of the Czech Republic for its presidency of the EU Council has set five priority areas which the document describes the priority areas of the Czech Republic Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2009 (in Czech version) .

Other priority areas are as follows:

  • Energy sustainable and safe
  • The budget for Europe's future
  • Europe as a global partner
  • Europe safe and free

The term EU presidency is generally defined as one member country chairing the Council of the European Union . This rotates the presidency after six months, which means that in each calendar year is divided into the two countries.

Each presiding country at the beginning of his term of office submit to the Council and the European Parliament setting out the objectives of the programme, which intends to during his presidency achieved in various areas of EU policy. These objectives are usually based on the current situation and issues that the EU addresses in a given period, while reflecting the specific priorities as chairman.

In order to preserve the continuity of the program was established Institute 18měsíčního programme, which jointly compiled three consecutive presidency. The Czech Republic consists of the formation with France, which will chair the EU in the second half of 2008 and Sweden, which takes over the Presidency of the Czech Republic in July 2009.

By June 2008 and processed by these three countries 18 monthly program of French, English and Swedish Presidency, and subsequently will cooperate in its implementation.
