- He graduated from the University of Chemical Technology in Prague
Work Experience:
- After studying in Prague, he worked in a manufacturing company as head of the investment department.
Since 1990, he worked in government.
- 1990 - 1992 in the Office of the Government as a senior advisor to Deputy Prime Minister is focusing on issues of economic transformation.
- Since July 1992 he worked in the Office of the Government of Czechoslovakia as a director of Advisors to the Deputy Minister of Czechoslovakia.
- During the transformation of ownership relations in the Czech Republic represented the Government in several management positions in the economic sphere.

- 1991 - 1992 by the Minister of Agriculture as a member of the Supervisory Board of the South Bohemian breweries.
- 1992 - 1994 by the Government Resolution as a board member and executive of West Bohemian breweries.
- 1994 - 1996 by order of the Chamber of Deputies elected officer of the Land Fund of the Republic.
- From January 1993 to January 1998, the Ministry of Defence as Deputy Minister, responsible for budget and acquisition processes.
- From January 2007 to May 2009 the Minister of Finance of the Czech Republic.
- From January to May 2009 presided over the Council of Ministers of Economy and Finance of the EU (Ecofin).
- Since 13th July 2010 he was appointed as the Minister of Finance of the Czech Republic.
Political Activities:

1998 - 2002 in early parliamentary elections he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic for the KDU-CSL.

2002 - 2005 after his re-election he became chairman of the Budget Committee of Chamber of Deputies.

2003 - 2006 he was Chairman of the KDU-CSL.

In June 2009, he founded a political party TOP 09 and since November 2009 is the first vice-chairman.
